Asian Vision

“Words are the voice of the heart; calligraphy is the painting of the heart.”

The ancients inscribed characters as a means of expressing the essential spirit of the universe through brushwork. In Chinese thought, writing a character is an embodiment of principles governing all life, including the natural tendency toward harmony. In Japan, the creation of an ensō—a symbol of wholeness—is an act in which body and breath are joined in a single, deliberate brushstroke. I have been particularly drawn to creating variations and thematic explorations of the characters for “harmony” and “wholeness.”

Tuscan Playful Obsessions

I have traveled to Tuscany many times over the past four decades and consistently find renewal in a land where light, language, and the spirit of the people—infused with centuries of history—awaken an inner voice that whispers, I, too, may have been Tuscan in a past life.

During a journey in June 2019 to Casole d’Elsa, near Siena, I attended a weeklong art and yoga workshop. On the first day, I set the intention: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities…” (Suzuki Roshi)—to remain open to the unexpected and to embrace the playfulness of possibility. In doing so, I explored artistic media in ways I had not before and found myself creating with both delight and focused engagement.

I have been intrigued by another facet of love—one that begins in our own depths, where being true to who we are means carrying our spirit like a candle at the center of our darkness. The same commitments we make to another can also be understood inwardly , as a devotion to the care of our own soul. We interweave the life of our spirit with the life of our emotions; the life of our heart with that of our mind; and the life of our faith with that of doubt and anxiety. By doing so, we create a life that is grounded, stronger, and more resilient in the world.
